Our Lady Queen of Angels School believes in the importance of music education for every child and adheres to the scriptural command given in Psalm 98 to “sing to the Lord a new song for He has done marvelous things”.

Kindergarten through grade 3 have music class twice a week for 30 minutes, while grades 4-6 have class once a week for 40 minutes with a trained music educator. Music curriculum in grades K-6 includes singing, playing small percussion and xylophones, rhythmic movement and folk dance, listening to many genres of music, as well as music literacy via the Kodaly method and traditional notation. 5th and 6th graders are introduced to the Soprano Recorder and have the opportunity to also learn Alto, Tenor, and Bass Recorder. Our Junior High currently experiences an Instrumental Music Program once a week for 50 minutes. Each student learns to play either a band or string instrument under the direction of Mater Dei High School staff members. For the past 5 years, Our Lady Queen of Angels School has engaged in a school-wide music listening program. Everyday at 8:00 am, the entire school stops to listen to a classical piece of music as well as a narration about the composer and the music.

All students perform in a school-wide Christmas program as well as individual grade performances during school liturgies. Our Lady Queen of Angels is a “singing” school and students spend time each week learning and reviewing music, which is sung in Mass. A select Cantor Ensemble leads school liturgies, which are coordinated with the Parish Director of Music. Students who want more extensive training in vocal development and music education are invited to join the OLQA Parish Children’s Choir which is open to all boys and girls, grades 3-8, who attend Our Lady Queen of Angels Parish.
